Dear Community Member,

Restorative justice has as one of its basic principles that crime is an injury, which harms the victim, the community and even the offender. The commission of a criminal offense creates the obligation to restore the victim and community to the fullest extent possible. Restorative justice recognizes that in order for justice to be served the system should provide a space for balanced and respectful participation by those affected by the offense, including the victim, the offender and the community. The goal is the creation of a consensus of accountability, responsibility, restitution and a plan for reparation. Restorative justice also support competency development by teaching both the defendant and and the other participants how to better manage conflict in the future.

Community members and the values of community they represent are essential for a sucessful restorative justice program. If you choose to become involved, you will have a valuable role in:

*     Providing input into the justice system regarding community protection issues;
*     Addressing community issues that contribute to or prevent crime/offenses;
*     Education city leaders about the needs of your commmunity, including your neighborhood;
*     Holding the justice system accountable for fulfilling its responsibilities related to community protection;
*     Providing opportunities for offenders, many of them who are young, to participate in structured, productive activities that benefit the community and/or provide the opportunity for competency development.

Online Justice, LLC is committed to restrorative justice values and principles. We hope that you continue your interest in supporting online conferencing making this powerful justice tool available to even more of the community.

Thank you for you interest and welcome,
